Henry Norman Bethune was a medical doctor and a card-carrying commie. He died from an infection while treating Communist Chinese soldiers wounded by the Japanese in 1939. Canadian TV viewers voted him the 26th Greatest Canadian of All Time in 2004.

Once regarded as a traitor, Dr. Henry Norman Bethune (1890-1939) was born in Gravenhurst, where his birth home has been preserved as a Canada National Historic Site and is a magnet for Chinese tourists. A bronze statue of the innovative physician and martyr of Red China was dedicated in 2000 and stands in the town's heritage square.
