Superman Tree
Lincoln, Nebraska
When a large tree died in Jason Thompson's front yard, he decided that the trunk ought to be turned into a sculpture -- and since he'd always been a Superman fan, he wanted a Superman.
Thompson asked several local artists, but all of them turned down the project. Then he hooked up with David Huismann, a University of Nebraska architecture student who'd never carved a human -- or superhuman -- before. Also, as a full-time student, he could only work on Superman in his spare time.
Huismann nevertheless took on the project, and after almost a year of sawing, slashing, and chiseling, the Man of Wood was finally completed in November 2019 -- his bulging muscles and eight-pack abs striking fear into any supervillain who drives past Jason Thompson's house.
