The Mayor's Stonehenge
Munfordville, Kentucky
Engraved "KY Stonehenge" on its heel stone, this is a handy 'henge for travelers in a hurry, as it's only a mile off an exit ramp for Interstate 65. Built by former Munfordville mayor Chester Fryer in his large yard, the Stonehenge is aligned with the points of the compass. At the summer solstice, the rising sun casts shadows through the monument's middle.
Chester has enhanced his Stonehenge with decorative shrubbery, and had enough rocks left over from its construction to build other rock sculptures such as "Garden of Gethsemane," "Earth Mysteries," and "Twisted Rock." Stonehenge was completed circa 2000, and Chester has said that the subsequent rise in the price of big rocks would have made the project unaffordable today.
July 2022: Chester Fryer, 88, passed away on July 8, 2022. Public access to admire his Stonehenge will continue....
